Capitol Cafe and Restaurant is the latest addition to the Accra restaurant scene.

Part of the Pearl in the City development in Cantonments by Acacia Build Limited, the restaurant is a feature of the suburb known mostly for its grand residential options for and a popular residential area for expatriates.

Cantonments has been known mostly for being a residential area, however lately there have been a number of retail and restaurant options available, much to the excitement of its residents.

The Capitol Cafe and Restaurant is impressive. The modern, clean and sleek colour scheme just screams cosmopolitan.

All the furniture and equipment is imported from Turkey, which is where the Director of this impressive development, Zekeriya Saygin, is from. A lot of thought and detail has been put into everything including the Capitol logo engraved into the dining tables, and serving trays for their teas.

Boasting a nineteen page menu, their food offerings are described as continental. Open from 7:30am in the morning to the late hours of the night, they offer everything from breakfast, coffee, pastries, lunch and dinner options, shisha and a small kids menu.

While no alcohol choices are available there are cocktails that cover two pages of the menu. The top of each menu page clearly states that all VAT (value added taxes) are included in the menu price, so there’s no surprise bill at the end of your meal or added service charges. This has become quite a popular practice amongst restaurants in Accra recently.

I was given a tour of the building and shown their outdoor dining area, outdoor bar, inside dining room, private function room (for parties or VIP events) and they even have a small children’s playground which is fenced off from the Acacia Apartments children’s playground.

While it is limited in equipment and no shade is available, it will definitely help keep the kids happy and occupied for some time.

The state of the art stainless steel kitchen was in an open style which is something I have not commonly seen at restaurants in Ghana.

I love the transparency of the open kitchen, and it took me back to my days of working in a commercial kitchen for an internship and how much I loved the hustle and bustle of it. That is definitely a story for another day!

I heard about the Capitol from a post on a Facebook group and the photo of the pastry and desserts display was one of my biggest draw cards in wanting to take the journey over to Cantonments to check this place out. Unfortunately out of the three display fridges, only one was stocked.

Service was on point and our waiter was meticulous with the details. From a paper placemat, to a plate and fork and knife as well as complimentary bread rolls freshly baked from their oven that was positioned next to the coffee machine.

I thought that was really smart. I mean, who can seriously resist the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through? I certainly cannot! What I thought would’ve been nice was to have a knob of butter served with the rolls. The roll itself was soft and fluffy.

I dined with my good friend, Eli, and we shared a shrimp casserole for starters, followed by the chicken wrap and Philly cheese steak sandwich.

The shrimp casserole was Mediterranean in style with a medley of green peppers and red onions and cubes of tomato pieces tossed through. There was also enough sauce for us to dip our bread rolls in.

The chicken wrap was delicious. Charred pieces of moist grilled chicken and mushrooms were encased in a tortilla wrap and served with a side of fries. I liked how it had a bit of a sauce but found it got a little bit soggy and if one is not careful, the contents of the wrap will drip and spill out.

The Philly cheese steak sandwich in comparison was dry and in need of a sauce.

Both dishes were a sizeable portion. The sandwich was also served with a side of fries and the beef was tender and cooked well. We were given complimentary profiteroles (pistachio and coconut flavoured) by management, which I forgot to take photos of as I hungrily dug into them before our mains even arrived.

The coconut profiterole was my favourite as it had a stronger flavour profile than the pistachio profiterole.

I ordered an apple tea which arrived ‘Turkish style’, on a customised engraved wooden tray.

It was refreshing, and a nice way to finish off a meal. Eli enjoyed her lemonade and described it as very nice, fresh and not overly sweet.

The desserts and pastries were beckoning to us, but we were both too full to eat anything more and promised ourselves we will be back just for the desserts!

Impressively, I heard from another friend that the display fridges were refilled the same evening so the chefs must have been busy at work while we dined.

Check out the Capitol Cafe and Restaurant for yourself and see what you think. I’d definitely recommend to go with an empty stomach and save room for dessert.
